World Well-being Week

June 20, 2024

The 24th till the 30th of June 2024 marks World Well-being Week, with the purpose of celebrating all areas of well-being, “From meaningful and purposeful work to financial security, physical, mental, and emotional health, social resilience, empathic corporate and civic leadership, community relations, and environmental care.”

Well-being is a combination of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and social health which all contributes to how you live your life and how you cope with certain situations, meaning that having a positive well-being enables you to function well, feel better about yourself, create meaningful social connections and cope better with any changes that may occur in your life.

Being a carer can take its toll, trying to ensure that your service users have a good physical and mental health, however it is important to look out for your own well-being too.

How to improve your well-being

Everyone can get overwhelmed sometimes, however it is important to look after yourself, no matter how much you want to give up. Staying on the right track and changing some little aspects of your daily routine can greatly improve your mental and physical state. Here are some examples of ways that you can improve your well-being.

  • Take time to relax and reduce stress when needed.

Sometimes aspects of your life can get the better of you and make you feel overwhelmed, you may feel suck and unable to move these thoughts from your mind, and sometimes you could just need a little time for yourself. This could range from participating in a hobby that you enjoy, watching your favourite film or just spending some time alone, distract yourself from any negative thoughts and focus on the things that you are grateful for.

  • Connect with others.

Whether this be a friend, family member or loved one that you see on a regular basis or perhaps a new colleague who you have not yet spoken too much, a simple chat can work wonders in boosting morale, not just for yourself but the person that you are connecting with too. If you’re comfortable enough you could also mention how you’re feeling and any negative thoughts you are having. It may sound daunting at first, but the people around you are there to support you.

  • Spend time with nature.

Sometimes a simple walk can be incredibly beneficial, no internet or social media, just connecting with the real world, enjoying the beauty that nature brings and admiring what we have around us.

  • Improve your sleep.

With your work or family commitments you may find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep, but even going to bed that little bit earlier can have great benefits on both your physical and mental well-being.

  • Be optimistic.

Remaining hopeful throughout your day and focusing on the positives can help you to have a better day. If you are only focusing on the negatives you will miss all of the happier parts that you should be grateful for.

  • Reach out for extra support.

If you are truly feeling low and are finding it difficult to open up to those around you, don’t let yourself struggle and reach out professionals and explain how you’re feeling so that you are able to access the support that you need. Speak to your GP for advice and support.

As a carer, don’t forget that we have our own emotional support and well-being service. If you would like someone to talk to or advice regarding your mental health please contact Carol Jackson, our Mental Health Lead. To contact Carol, you can ring 07751 828989 or email carol.jackson@dalecare.co.uk.
