The 23rd – 29th of May 2024 marks National Conversation Week. The purpose of this awareness week is to encourage more conversations in both our personal and professional lives. Whether this be speaking out about something that’s been worrying you or just to have a simple catch up with your friends and family, communicating with people can have many different benefits.
Benefits of Conversation
Without you even realising, talking to others no matter who they are can have many benefits to both your well-being and your life in general. Here are some examples of those benefits:
- Helps you to create connections with new people.
- Can improve your current relationships.
- Necessary for communication and therefore helps you to understand things better.
- Gives you and others the opportunity to share information and therefore can boost your knowledge.
- Can help to give you a new perspective on different matters.
- Has many psychological benefits.
- Boosts your overall mood and makes you feel better.
- Gives you more of a sense of value as it makes you feel listened to.
- Helps to showcase your personality to others.
- Bonds people together.
What to talk about
Conversations can sometimes be difficult and a little awkward, especially depending on who you’re talking to and what you’re talking about, but when you think about the benefits that talking can have on both you and others, it’s always worth it in the end.
If you’ve experienced any conflict recently, get it out in the open.
Misunderstandings and conflicts are never an easy subject no matter how complex the actual issue may be, however there is only one way that they can be resolved and that is simply through talking about it. Most disagreements stem from miscommunication, no matter if this is with friends, family, or co-workers. By talking about the situation and getting a new perspective, you can come to an agreement and help put the past behind you, which will in turn make everyone feel much better.
Sometimes it’s good to have someone to speak to, or even just someone to listen.
It can be hard to realise if someone you know isn’t feeling their best, especially if they’re too shy to say. Whether a person wants to talk about their problems or not, a conversation can always help to increase their mood, as just having someone to hear what you’ve got to say can make you feel appreciated and cared for.
Conversations can even be had without the need for an important topic and can just be done to have fun.
Quality time with your loved ones or simply just a quick catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while could be all you need as these are the moments that turn into great memories that you’ll forever cherish.
With these many benefits, you can see how powerful conversations are and how they can help people without even realising. While conversations have always been beneficial, with the ever-evolving improvements to technology, face-to-face contact is prioritised less and less. This week try to encourage more in person conversations, as it is important for us to avoid communicating through our screens whenever we can and engage with people the old-fashioned way for us to fully access the benefits that proper conversations hold.
